TiVo Slide Pro QWERTY Remote Now Available

Based on a prematurely published blog post, we’ve learned that the refreshed TiVo QWERTY remote leaked by the WSJ and FCC docs is the real deal and presumably launching this week. The backlit TiVo Slide Pro Remote features both IR and RF capabilities that link to a single TiVo box. Beyond the obvious keyboard convenience, when mated to a Roamio (versus Premiere or Mini), the Slide Pro provides an audible remote finder. While the cached post mentions learning capabilities in passing, TiVo’s updated support page elaborates — and the feature previously seen on Glo and Slide remotes does indeed make its triumphant return. Pricing should drop any day now…

Update: The Slide Pro is now available for purchase via TiVo.com and ships in two forms: one with a RF USB dongle to support Premiere and Mini hardware, and one without as Roamio has RF built-in. Unlike the lofty $90 pricing of the original TiVo Slide, both versions of the new model run a reasonable $50.

(Thanks Link & Philip!)

  1. The FCC links include a RF USB dongle, as we saw with the original TiVo Slide. So it’s possible there are two models here, one with the dongle, one without. Or everyone gets one, even tho you wouldn’t necessarily need it with the Roamio.

For comparison purposes, the original TiVo Slide launched in 2008 at $90. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this land in the $70-$90 range. Which would be a bit extreme, given you could get a whole Roku for $50 or Apple TV for $100. But the market is probably there…

  2. I hope they fixed the problem with the daughterboard popping out on the old Slide remotes. Once every six months or so I have to open it up and plug it back in. I’m too lazy to find a Styrofoam peanut to keep it packed in there. Besides, who still uses those nowadays?

  3. Based on the language, it sure seems like it is a true learning remote.

The enhanced remote also has Search and Back buttons and learns commands for power, input, volume and mute directly from the remote controls of your TV and receiver.

  4. We’ll know for sure soon… and I assume that was a draft (vs final copy) that they accidentally published, as there’s no pricing or sales link.

  5. I’m hoping they sell it for a lot less than $90. Like, maybe $40 at the most. I’m guessing the reason why the last TiVo Slide Remote didn’t last was because nobody bought them at that price.

  6. I’ve been using several Slides for a couple of years now. So far they have not had any issues in my use. I wouldn’t mind getting the new slide remote with the new button placement like the Roamio remote. But I would need to get three remotes since I don’t like going back and forth between different button layouts. I rarely touch the Roamio remote because of this since I hit the wrong buttons for Guide and Zoom when using it.

So hopefully they are priced lower than the original slide. If the price is right and I can sell my original Slide remotes I will most definitely pick up three of these new ones. I just hope the new Slide remote works as well as my original Slides.

  7. I wonder why TiVo didn’t go with a WiFi remote the Roku3? There is no lag, you can hide the box as it’s not line of sight never misses a key press and the connection allows streaming of sound so you can use headphones for late night viewing.

I sometimes watch Netflix on Roku3 late at night just so I can listen on earphones with the volume up. Best feature I never knew I needed until it arrived.

  9. Completely agree, headphone capabilities would definitely put this remote ahead of the game. Best feature on a remote imo

  10. Yup, looks like its the same as the one in my inbox. Doesn’t seem that compelling honestly, when you’re still paying over $800 for the box I want… I can wait. Let’s see what they do for Black Friday. Maybe I’ll wait into next year…

The problem is I know the switch has the potential to be a giant pain in the ass. Comcast may f’up the CableCARD install. I may have to schedule multiple visits. There might be a billing error that I’ll have to watch for. I’ll have to use TTG to backup all my recordings, and then restore them if/when I ever decide to watch them on the new box. I’ve never used the season pass transfer successfully, but hey maybe it’ll work this time etc. All so I can spend a lot of money for something thats a little faster than what I’ve got and has two more tuners… Not feeling it at this price.

  11. I had a few alerts set and happened to be online when they were triggered an hour or so ago… but thank you for trying! :)

  12. Glenn, if you do get a Roamio, it’s worth the time to get KMTTG set up and running – season pass transfers couldn’t be much easier, once you get over the learning curve, which isn’t too bad IMO.
I don’t know that I’ll use the program for much in the future, but it was a huge time saver for season passes alone.
