TiVo Roamio Remote Now Available for $30

If your household is anything like mine, you might find you’re in need of his and hers TiVo remotes – one for each nightstand. Fortunately, new Roamio owners now have that option… as TiVo has launched a Roamio Remote accessory for $29.99:

  • Award-winning peanut shape in a more compact size and with new “back” button for use in apps.
  • Control power, input, volume and mute of your TV and/or audio receiver.
  • IR/RF signal removes line-of-sight requirements, ideal for in-cabinet setups.
  • Press the remote finder button on your TiVo Roamioâ„¢ Plus or Pro to have the remote play a TiVo jingle so you can easily find it.

Officially, the remote only supports Roamio hardware. However, we imagine it could handle typical control of prior TiVo DVRs via IR. Having said that, unlike the premium Glo and Slide remotes (RIP), this stock Roamio clicker doesn’t provide learning capabilities. Oh, it can still be programmed to control your television and audio receiver — but if you’re doing anything tricky, you may find yourself limited. Perhaps the incoming QWERTY remote will reintroduce that feature… along with a USB RF/BT dongle for use with Minis and Premieres.

  1. Hopefully that bodes well for a $59.99 pricepoint on the Roamio Slide. If I remember correctly, the orignal Slide launched at $89 but the glo remote was $59. Then they eventually dropped the price to $59 when they stopped selling the base remote.

    It’s incredibly silly.

I sat out the S4 generation for semi-obvious reasons, and was excited to upgrade to S5 very close to day one. And now I find the lack of a mere learning Glo is getting in my way.

Our 2TB S3 is perfectly serviceable for our one-teevee household, but I’d like to give Alviso an extra chunk of my money for a nice product, if only they’d make it a bit less onerous on my use-case-scenario. Silly…

  3. I was wondering, does anyone know if the Harmony One will work with the Tivo Roamio and if so will the 30 second skip button function. I have a series 3 that is still going strong but need to plan for eventual upgrade. Going back to multiple remotes or sitting through commercials does not appeal to me.

  4. @Chucky You do realize the Glo is still widely available at retail, right?

The thing that’s always driven me nuts is the single power button. Great, you can control my TV and receiver, but I can only turn one of them on and off? Just adding that one capability (even if it’s one button doing both, or losing another button for the functionality) would make the Peanut suitable for 99% of my remote usage — but without it, it’s useless.

  5. “@Chucky You do realize the Glo is still widely available at retail, right?”

Sure. But how does it work with the Roamio?

Do all DVR functions work, but OTT is off-limits because the lack of the “back” button? Is that the scenario?

  6. You give up RF control, including the little lost remote audible alert, and you’d lose the back button. You’d control the Roamio only via IR. I do believe there will be another basic remote with USB RF dongle, in addition to a higher end Roamio Slide…

  7. “and you’d lose the back button.”

Which, again, would make OTT off-limits via the Glo?

(But via IR, I could still control all DVR functions?)

  8. Probably not off limits, but trickier? We do it now without that button – and the Mini, Roamio, and Premieres should all be running very similar Netflix apps within a few weeks…

  9. “Probably not off limits, but trickier?”

Huh. Hadn’t realized it might really be possible. For example, you can’t navigate Roku without the ‘back’ button.

“We do it now without that button – and the Mini, Roamio, and Premieres should all be running very similar Netflix apps within a few weeks…”

Well then, perhaps better news than I’d been expecting. I wait for Glo/Roamio reports with bated breath.

  10. You can control the Roamio (all buttons) with the Harmony One. I had to force it to learn a few buttons (I believe the “clear”, “zoom”, “skip”, and “skip back” buttons). In order to learn the buttons, you need to force the Roamio remote to go into IR mode by pressing and holding the Tivo + D buttons for 10 or so seconds. The light at the top will turn red instead of amber I believe.

Took me far too long to figure out how to learn the buttons, so I figured I’d write a little post that could help someone else.

  11. Not sure what you mean by “here” as this is site doesn’t sell anything. If you mean TiVo.com, well they’re the only ones currently selling the Roamio replacement remote. So you pay their fee or your wait for Amazon. *shrug*
