The Clintons Dig Slingbox & TiVo

clinton-slingbox

It appears I’m in good company as the Clinton family appreciates both TiVo and Slingbox hardware. As the story goes, Hillary was traveling abroad and was unable to catch Bill’s speech locally (obviously) and in real time. So she remotely caught the DVR-ed presentation at an ambassador’s home:

For you technophiles that were curious as to how she was able to watch the speech, it was via SlingPlayer, which streamed a recording from a SlingBox connected to an aide’s home TiVo.

(via Blake Krikorian… you know, the guy who invented the Slingbox.)

  1. From the article it sounds like one of her aides has a tivo and a slingbox. So I don’t think the Clinton family owns them. But you are in the same company as a government drone :)

You think the house in Chappaqua doesn’t have a TiVo?

  3. And utterly tangentially, TheBlaze’s story includes:

“By the way, in case you didn’t know where Timor-Leste is either…”

The only way you don’t know about East Timor and where it’s located is if you haven’t been even intermittently reading the World section of the news over the past 20 years. It’s been in the news a lot over the past generation. Bloody occupation, horrific massacres, world condemnation, local resistance, and then independence. No US troops, but it’s been in the World section a lot until very recently.

In short, this isn’t like trying to locate Malawi on the map…

  4. Why didn’t she use a Vulkano?

I’ve never used a Slingbox but I do use a Hava HD Platinum(the new boxes are called Vulkano) and have been very pleased with it for remote viewing.

  5. “You think the house in Chappaqua doesn’t have a TiVo?”

I mean, seriously, if you were to survey the <1% of folks who have the wealth to have someone come in and be their on-call tech "interior designer", what would the TiVo market penetration be among that tiny subgroup?

    10%? 20%? 33%? 50%?

It's nice that's TiVo is also competitive on price for those with more limited financial means but high tech awareness, but I'd guess that a very outsize portion of the US-based ‘global elite’ are rocking TiVo’s in their homes.

Worst DVR in the world with the single exception of all the others…

Hillary probably has threeor more Slingboxes running at a given time. Focused on programs of national and international issues.

Which ones are hooked up to a camera dvr security system that records Bill’s activities? I don’t want to know……

  7. pissh – Hilary has aides that capture everything and distill it down to what she really needs to see that has already been aired.

Hopefully our Secretary of State is otherwise engaged in what is going on at the moment

Of course. Or to take it to an even higher level, think about all the video monkeys working for The Daily Show / Colbert who record all the cable news channels and pick out the tasty stuff for a reel. (Always sounded like a fun job to me.)

  9. you know, slingbox was ahead of its time and continue to remain quite relevant. Nothing has really replaced it yet, since we don’t yet have NETWORK DVR. I always thought this was where slingmedia should somehow go, and with DISH I think that was the case (it SORT of it, with hopper, and 7-day network prime time recording WITH sling) but isn’t yet a truly NETWORK DVR. Honestly, I truly believe, it will be APPLE that “cracks this” and makes my desired content, based on ownership rights and access, available wherever, whenever, on whatever (ios) device I have available.
