Skype for iPhone Now Supports Video

Skype has launched an updated app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad that  supports Skype to Skype video calls over WiFi and 3G. You can use the new app to make calls to other Skype users on an iOS device, or anyone using the desktop version of Skype.

Sure, you could already use FringTango, or Apple’s FaceTime app to make video calls on an iPhone. But Skype already has a huge user base, and this makes it a lot more likely that the person you’re calling will be able to take your video call. I just had a brief Skype 3.0 iPod to iPod call with GigaOm’s Kevin Tofel, and the audio and video quality was pretty good. Not quite as good as Apple’s FaceTime, but pretty close.

Skype for iOS is available as a free download from the App Store. But there’s still no word on when Skype will be adding video to its Android client.
