Want a Rdio Invite?

While I’ve yet to really dig in, Rdio looks to be a cool, new music service supporting various web and mobile playback options. In fact, Rdio seems like something we’d get if unReal Rhapsody was re-conceptualized and modernized with a little Web 2.0 and a whole lot of mobile.

In addition to the typical playlist building and streaming you’d expect, Rdio has one especially clever feature built in such a way that the company shouldn’t incur the wrath of any music gods. Their optional Adobe Air desktop software will scan your iTunes or Windows Media Player library for songs you currently posses, and populate your online Rdio collection (from their source files). Meaning the music you already purchased is now available just about anywhere.

Rdio starts off with a free 3 day trial, which can be extended for another 10 days with a credit card (which is where I’m at). Beyond that, you have a choice of two subscriptions: (click to enlarge)

Given my current XM Online and Slacker subscriptions, along with my delegation of playlist creation (to them), I’m unlikely to make a jump anytime soon. But Rdio is off to a great start. And, thanks to the kindness of geekaren, I’ve got 10 beta Rdio invites to give out. Leave a comment if you want in.

  1. Richard, you can extend the trial after the 3 days for another 10 (which is what I’ve done). However, I DO agree that 3 days is too short to fully understand and appreciate the service. I didn’t have time in my first three days to check it out, for example.

  2. Thanks.

I’ve been testing Grooveshark over the last two weeks and paid for the 1 year VIP membership ($30). Have you tried it out? If you do find me at richardfrisch.

  3. I’d love to put Rdio through it’s paces and benchmark it against Spotify (which I currently subscribe to for £9.99 a month) and Grooveshark which I have also used. Do you still have any invites to spare?

  4. Anybody else think Rdio is slow? Seem to have to wait between 5 and 10 seconds everytime I switch pages. Sometimes it is sub 3 second but most changes are quite a bit slower.

  5. Didn’t someone else try this with MP3 Locker – where they scanned your CD’s to see what you owned. I believe he was sued out of existence by the record companies.

  6. I was in on the beta. Never tried it during the 3 day trial. Seems to me like lala except with a subscription. I’ll stick with Pandora, Slacker, and MP3tunes.

  7. Meh, tried it. its not that great. Has less features than rhapsody, can’t play your collection easily (must queue up each song, can’ t just hit random) and has a smaller licensing collection compared to rhapsody.

The mobile software is less buggy, though.

I’m going to stick with slacker.

  8. At this point we’ve, we’ve invited 14 people. Please comment again if you still need an invite. More importantly, please comment if you’re willing to share back. Thanks!

  9. I haven’t tried this, but it sounds like the worst of LaLa, Napster, and Rhapsody. Are you just limited to the stuff it scans in your library and that is what you can listen to? Cause if so, it sounds like Rhapsody would be better as it has the whole catalog for the same price ($10). Web only competes with Napster ($5). This is all theoretical for me as I haven’t tried any of those (other than Lala, R.I.P.)

  10. @ John Teague

It’s a streaming service independent from your personal music collection. Compare it to Slacker or Pandora. The Adobe Air client (optional to install) does the music scanning. Haven’t played with that nor will I.

I’m the type that wants to be feed music (commercial free – I’m willing to pay) and that’s it. Not into developing playlists which this service seems to be about. XM did a great job (out of my price range to-date) and so does Slacker.

  11. Just hearing about Rdio and it definitely sounds like something I’d like to try. I’d love an invite, and would certainly be willing to share back.
