TiVo Desktop PC Software Gets Minor Update

TiVo’s upgraded their Desktop PC software to version 2.8.1. All in all it’s a pretty minor refresh in terms of new functionality. Paying customers (“Plus”, $25) will see slightly beefed up video features, including a TiVoToGo Apple iPad transcoding profile (640×480), while everyone is treated to the improved troubleshooting Help menu. Audio streaming and photo sharing capabilities remain unchanged.

While I am a Plus licensee, TiVoToGo has been dead to me about a year since moving into Cox’s punitive cable regime. But I did want to try out the new TiVo Desktop for coverage purposes. Unfortunately, either something within my home network or related to the new Premiere (review) is preventing transfers… as TiVo Desktop scanning craps out at 11/75 recordings, followed by a network connectivity error. Sadly, the freeware alternative kmttg is also ineffective under my current configuration. And given Cox’s CCI Byte situation, I didn’t care to to press on with that expanded TiVo Desktop troubleshooting.

  1. New feature for TivoToGo software has added conversion for iPad, nice if you use your iPad with a PC but not if you use your Apple iPad with an Apple computer as the software is for PCs. Tiny bit of irony in there.

  2. TiVo Desktop has been dead to me too every since Windows 7 and My Xbox 360 support on-the-fly transcoding of virtually every video format. I don’t particularly ever want to move any content from my TiVo to my desktop and the experience going the other direction via Win7/Xbox is so far superior it makes the rather flaky TiVo Desktop pointless in my environment.

  3. Well, a minor upgrade, but what the hell, I still use Tivo Desktop to get cable shows onto my iPad/iPhone so still useful to me. I’ll upgrade momentarily. Thanks Dave.

  4. Ever since PyTiVo came out I use it for all video serving to my TiVo DVRs. Desktop still runs to port some shows to my smartphone but since I work from home currently I can watch on a slightly bigger screen at lunch time :) so I fire up desktop 2 or 3 times a year to load up my phone for trips.

If anyone is having the smae trouble as Dave – it likely is a cache with some corrupt files. Go to www, tivo, com and look ofr way to clear cache

  5. Zeo, I got my Series3 back online and it’s recordings are seen on the network by TiVo Desktop and kmttg. Also, I tested software on both PC and Mac, so I doubt it’s a Windows cache folder issue. I can manually hit the Premiere webpage OK. But TiVo Desktop is still failing at 11 (of 79 recordings) today. So it seems specific to the Premiere (which I have networked on a Asus wireless bridge). It could also be a service/MAK thing – TiVo recently assisted me in cleaning up my account/service as this box is finally transitioned from “review loaner” to “Dave’s.” So maybe it’s my fault.
