November Console Sales: Nintendo Blowout

It’s time to create a whole new category for the Wii phenomena. Holy cow– more than 2 million in sales in North America in November is crazy. Yet, to this day there still isn’t a single game on the Wii I’d want to play – not one. Yet you can’t deny those numbers. Video game industry sales are UP 10% year over year. Terrific given the economic downturn.

I was happy to see the 360 outsell the PS3 and PSP combined. Though I’m starting to worry about the PS3’s long-term prospects given its continued poor results. Despite the industry upturn, the PS3’s sale’s numbers are lower than its November 2007 numbers. The PS2 results show its time is coming to an end. I wonder how many months before Sony kills it? But, it still hasn’t reached the $99 price point. Perhaps it can grasp a few more months of breath with a price drop before Sony puts it out of its misery.

  1. Nothing interests me Marcus. There are a few I’d be ‘willing’ to try because of all the hype they got: Mario Galaxy for example. But, I like adult games with terrific immersive graphics. Save for games like Prince of Persia, I’m not a platformer gamer. Most games on the Wii are either platformers or use 5 year old graphics. I get my fill of everything I enjoy on the 360 and, occasionally, on the PS3. If there was an exclusive game or two on the Wii that interested me, I might pick it up (assuming I could find one). But so far, nada.

  2. I wouldn’t go quite as far as Dale, but I owned the Wii for a month then unloaded it on a pal. It’s just not for me. If I had kids, maybe I’d feel differently. I do agree with Dale that the 360 provides the best experience… when the hardware isn’t breaking.

  3. I understand your reasoning, Dale and Dave. I love to play video games, but my wife not as much. She doesn’t enjoy the more “adult” games like FPS and such, but really enjoys playing Wii Sports, Mario Kart, etc. I like pretty much any video game so the Wii was a great choice for us. I also have a little one, so I’m sure she’ll enjoy the Wii once she is old enough to uderstand video games.

  4. I’ve got a 7, 6, and 4-year old. All of their friends have Wii boxes. That’s all they know. Word of mouth among elementary school age kids is a powerful thing. Then there are the grandparents (in their 70s), who know about Wiis from their friends, who play with their kids. Technical simplicity is powerful. And then there is my wife, who learned how to double-click a couple of years ago, ok, simplicity again.

  5. I contributed (1) to the 2 million Wii sales in November. They are easy to find now and yes, great family fun. When the family is asleep, the 360 comes out to play.

  6. I have had a Wii for 1.5 years now, and played it pretty regularly and we really enjoyed it. Last April or so, we decided to get a PS3 as well with all the promotions going on at the time. Fastforward to today…We haven’t turned on the Wii for ~2.5 months, and the PS3 has been on at least 5 days a week. The Wii’s a fun system, but there hasn’t been anything released recently to give me a reason to turn it on other than World of Goo. I just hope that it doesn’t sit and collect dust until the next generation of systems comes out. I don’t regret the purchase, but the games haven’t kept me interested in it for a while now.
