Moxi 3012 Cable Box On Display

Digeo’s long discussed next-generation (OCAP, CableCARD) Moxi cable box is on display at The Cable Show. Both Digeo and Charter Communications are Paul Allen ventures, so it’s no surprise that Charter will be the first cable-co offering this DVR… with deployment possibly beginning in the third quarter:

Digeo, Inc., today announced that Charter Communications, Inc. will begin deploying the new Moxi Cable HD DVR 3012. The announcement marks the first order and deployment of Digeo’s second generation offering which incorporates a dual HD-tuner digital video recorder (DVR). The Moxi 3012 also includes the Emmy(R) award-winning Moxi Menu user interface, along with the following advanced features:

  • Full DVR functionality
  • CableCARD(R) multi-stream 2-way support
  • Remote web scheduling capable
  • External storage options up to 1TB
  • Extensive data mining through the Moxi portal for real-time customer usage insights

  1. Is this device going to be sold a la carte like the TiVo HD/Series 3? Or is it going to be deployed only via the cable companies themselves?

  2. Cable co only eh? Too bad I have Comcast. This box looks real nice. I take it Charter will be a big customer?

  3. I hope, this new box actually works as reliably as TiVo. If Moxi has such difficulty rolling out hardware, I don’t understand why they just don’t license their “Emmy award-winning” interface and leave hardware business alone.

P.S. To the left of the box is a Western Digital external drive. I have a pair of 1TB Essential drives that look exatly like that.

  4. Tivo really needs some stiff competition, imho. I think that they have become stale and need a good, swift kick in the rear to get going again.

  5. Yep, TiVo’s core DVR functionality is very reliable – but the UI is largely unchanged. Needs to be faster and modernized: more graphical yet less cartoony, granular settings for power users, etc.

  6. A follow up question on deployment: is the box inter-operable (I’m guessing yes with the cablecard, but with cable companies you never know) or will it be somehow ‘married’ to the specific cable company?

  7. I have the older MOXI and love it. Its fast and very user friendly. The problem is it has no HDMI. I have been asking charter for this box for a month now. No luck so far.

  8. rumor is some charter employees are starting to be offered this in the northern wi kma. maybe customers will start seeing this unit soon.

  9. Charter customer in Missouri. Got this box about a month ago. I am on my second one. First one had issues with on demand. Seems a little more sluggish than the older moxi that I have upstairs.

  10. I just had a moxi box replaced and expalined to the man with charter the problem I was in. That problem, the fact I had been given a Toshiba DVD Video Recorder that had no tuner. I asked if Charter supplied an updated moxi box, his response, “No, we only use reurbished moxi boxes.” Then surfing the web I discover this page. I hope it prints, I will take it with me to prove either Charter or their workers are LIARS!
