I think there's two perspectives here... The perspective of the guy who wants to archive video, and the perspective of companies providing content.

On the vendor side, nearly everyone who ISN'T Apple is using Microsoft DRM with WMV already - so I see Silverlight as an opportunity to expand the reach of Netflix, Amazon Unbox, etc to new platforms like Mac OS X and Linux, perhaps later this year.

As far as DivX goes, I've always questioned their business - not sure licensing a codec is a sustainable model. And Adobe dropping Flash licensing fees entirely could be the beginning of the end - assuming the software player and device support H.264 which has really gained traction lately.

Honestly, I don't think DivX has much of a hold on the P2P community anymore. XviD seems much more common, for whatever reason.

I use DivX as a reasonable archive format for videos at the moment. I can burn a Data DVD for my dad with more stuff on it, and in less time, than if I burn an MPEG-2 video DVD. And the videos transcode onto my TV using Tivo Desktop.

The transcodes using DivX encoder are VERY slow however. Hopefully their purchase of Main Concept will see some improvement here. All those extra cores in modern processors should really be good for something...

Thanks Dave. I figured it was a typo because I thought on the old theme it showed as URL. Sorry for the confusion and I stand corrected.

Charles, URI is often used interchangeably with URL. But it's probably not common knowledge. Good call, I'll update it momentarily. (In general, I'm still cleaning up this theme - search appearance and function still has issues for example. Need an Archive page. Etc.)

Great article Davis. I'm a big big fan of DivX. High quality small files and very portable. Thanks to Dave Z's heads up beta testing posts last year I have been able to take part in the beta testing for the Sandisk TakeTV and DivX Connected projects (TakeTV is better for weekend ski trips, DivX better for living room viewing). I also have three DivX certified DVD players in the house. I will be holding off getting a Blu-Ray player until there is an affordable one that plays nice with DivX.

Dave Z-Just an FYI. When posting a reply the field under E-mail shows up as URI (upper respiratory infection?) not URL (Uniform Resource Locator).
