Reuters reports,

Netflix said that with such a clear signal from the industry, it will only buy Blu-ray discs going forward and will phase out stock of HD DVD by about the end of the year.

  1. Now the question is … when will Universal and Paramount follow?

The only thing I really want in high def is Heroes … and I’m not picking up a Toshiba paperweight just to get it.

  2. I figured Netflix rentals would allow me to recoup some of the money I spent on my Toshiba A3. Even though I knew it was only a matter of time, Netflix still dumped HD DVD faster than I had expected.

It’s a good thing the Star Trek:TOS boxed set I bought has the combo standard DVD version on the back, and that I didn’t actually spend any other money on HD DVD discs.

  3. Now, if only a decent, problem free BD player would be released, I’d hop on. I’m waiting for the Panny BD50.

  4. So when will Sony, etc. start offering a conversion program, giving me a deal for trading in my old HD-DVD player?

It’s fun to gloat about either side winning, but in the end, it really sucks for those on the losing side. And it really should have never come down to two sides at all.

  5. Yep, it’s been bad for the industry and will leave many with (well deserved) bitter feelings. Which is why the sooner the HD DVD camp folds, the better – before more folks end up with limited-value hardware. Moves like Netflix choosing a side will hopefully speed up the process of burying HD DVD. Unfortunately, the early adopters are most likely out of luck and will be stuck with their slow upscaling DVD players.

  6. I for one will be keeping my Xbox 360 Add on player. I’ve got several movies that look and sound awesome, and until Blu Ray shows they can produce features like U Control on HD DVD, I’ll still enjoy watching Transformers and Bourne Ultimatum for a long time to come.

Now, if only the Blu camp would get off their buts, complete the profile for good and release some affordable, fully-functioning players I’m more than willing to go Blu.
