TiVo and Roxio Acknowledge TiVoToGo Troubles

Both TiVo and Roxio have acknowledged what many of us have known for some time (PVRBlog, TiVo Community, Roxio Support Forums, several emails): TiVo’s fall software update (9.1/9.2) included some sort of change which impacts a percentage of TiVoToGo file conversions and DVD burning from Mac Roxio software. So I checked in with both TiVo and Roxio… TiVo PR confirmed that they’re aware of these issues and are collaborating with Roxio to produce a “timely” fix, and Roxio adds:

As a result of the recent TiVo DVR update and release of Leopard, some Roxio customers using Toast 8 and Popcorn 3 are experiencing technical issues which we are actively working to resolve. We plan to release updaters in the near future.

Until those updates land (no ETA was given), I suggest trying the free TiVoDecode Manager or SeasonPassGetter. You might even discover that you didn’t have a need for Roxio’s software after all.

  1. Believe it or not, I haven’t tried TTG since getting the update on my S3 and THD. Though, I’ve been enjoying multi-room viewing of HD content (Dexter). Though my transfer times seem unreasonably slow, so I may have some network issues to track down. (A wireless bridge at each TiVo and a suspect router.) Not only am I not transferring in real time, it’s taking hours.

  2. I’ve also been having issues using TDM – The Roxio client plays everything back at doubletime, while TDM has audio dropouts every couple of seconds. However, my understanding is that some people seem to be doing fine with TDM, so we’ll see what happens.

  3. Is it possible to automatically convert files and send them to your tivo using mac software? I switched to mac and miss being able to send DVDs directly to my tivo for watching.

  4. It’s been awhile since I’ve messed with it, but you can turn on the hidden TiVoBack in the Mac TiVo Desktop software. You should be able to rip DVDs with something like Handbrake, not sure if additional conversion or what settings might be needed though to get a successful transfer.

  5. I have been very disappointed in Roxio’s Popcorn 3. I am using TiVoDecode manager now and it works much better! Plus it’s free! Sad to say but Popcorn 3 was a total waste of money.

  6. Dave, not clear if you mean you haven’t run TTG since getting your S3’s, but I’m doing both multiroom and TTG between a Tivo HD and a DT and a Windows XP system and it all works fine. Haven’t tried transferring HD content to the PC or another Tivo yet (don’t have another HD box), so can’t comment on that.

  7. Let’s see, TDM was broke for me until I did a Leopard clean-install. Could’ve been the Leopard, could’ve been the clean.

Now it works, somewhat, you still have to move the file out of it’s original locale (it’s ok) to a different spot or else it’ll restart and keep restarting (the file download that is). I never really used TTG because of the low-res issue.

  8. Big John… can you give more info on that? I’m having trouble with TDM downloads restarting over and over also on a clean Leopard install.

But I’m totally new to TDM so I’m not sure what you mean.
