yep, that was a bad move by TiVo. I completely agree with the article and how it mixes in poorly with an alredy established community of people talking TiVo just cause they like the product/company.

Um, Tivo already does part of what you want, at least with Season Passes…for instance, even my Series 1 was smart enough to grab the 1 AM re-broadcast of hockey games, if the first showing conflicted with a higher-priority Season Pass. Not sure if it would do it for lower-priority ones, but hey…it’s not that hard to set priorities.

Dr Love talks about the unbox thing from amazon .. They did give $15 in free content when it first launched. However you are REQUIRED to sign up with amazon and REQUIRED to use the one click checkout .

I would have loved to use it .. and most likely would have bought more then a few movies.

However amazon REQUIRING me to store my CC info with them kept me from signing up. And yes I even emailed amazon about it and the official response was “f*ck off we dont need your money then”

I wish Tivo would spend more money adding real features to the Tivo like: Easy conflict management, some smart AI where if I am trying to record say ER on NBC and It’s Always Sunny in Philly that the Tivo could say ER is only shown once this week and IASIP is on 10 times, that ER should be recorded over ER and IASIP can be recorded later in the week, or even that if I have multiple Tivo’s on my network that they split recording duties, i.e. if I want three shows and that is programmed all on one dual tuner Tivo then it sends the program over to the other one to record…

These types of features would make existing customers insanely happy, and would attract more customers, versus the ads (probably cheaper too).

Also if they want to give rebates, do it with Amazon Unbox, give new users $50 of free content, that will get people… It just seems like more ads is not the solution right now, more features will always help, look at Apple iPhone they are selling them like hot cakes because of adds, they are selling them because of the features…
