CNBC HD… Isn’t?

cnbc_logo.pngCNBC is going HD. Sort of. The channel will broadcast in 16:9 and they’ll show HD graphics, banners, and tickers on the sides. But the 4:3 talking heads will preside in all their (upscaled) SD glory. While I can sort of understand saving money by delaying the HD studio gear investment, it’s still somewhat baffling considering my CBS affiliate, for example, has been doing the local nightly news in HD for some time.

  1. At least its an interesting and unique (?) use of the extra 33% of horizontal space.

I don’t see any need for CNBC to be in hi def video wise. Heck, for years I’ve recorded on S2s at Basic – and that includes the ticker and bugs which in the SD version do benefit from Medium.

With the latter upscaled and all digital, I figure it’ll look great.

It might also be a bit complex to figure out how to present the entire existing 4×3 format in 16×9 and preserve both viewer experiences. So just leaving the 4×3 alone and adding to it in 16×9 might be easier.
