Network DVR Killed (In Court)

10 months after heading to court, Cablevision’s network DVR concept has been killed. No surprise here, though we may see follow-on court action and/or a tweaking of their proposed implementation… By contrast, Time Warner has successfully launched a head end-based service (Start Over) by sharing revenue with the networks. Multichannel News writes:

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled in favor of Twentieth Century Fox Film, Universal City Studios, Paramount Pictures, Disney Enterprises, CBS, ABC , NBC Studios and Turner Broadcasting System’s Cartoon Network and CNN, which sued Cablevision in May.

“We are disappointed by the judge’s decision and continue to believe that remote-storage DVRs are consistent with copyright law and offer compelling benefits for consumers, including lower costs and broader availability of this popular technology,â€? Cablevision said in a prepared statement Thursday night.

  1. Not surprising considering the messed up copyright laws in this country.

Either the judge was following similar corrupt decisions as legal precedence or he was bribed himself.

What we really need is one network hooked up TiVo that feeds small set top boxes around the house all hooked up the same network or directly to the main TiVo unit and, of course, able to feed up to, say, three televisions simultaneously different shows. I hope we see it in time – or a easy linux based box that does the same thing.

These opinions are mine and you CAN’T HAVE THEM!
